This collection of wet and dry recent mollusks, and Pleistocene subfossils is still in the early stages of development with very active collecting and cataloguing. Land, freshwater, and marine habitats are about equally represented, but our marine collections are now growing the fastest. The collecting area is essentially restricted to the Canadian Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, and its surrounding continental shelfslope waters to a depth of 4,000 m.

As well there a few thousand lots of marine molluscs. Significant contributions have been made from the estate of the late Dr Frank Bernard, and by Dr. Ian McTaggart-Cowan. Most of their donations are marine. The collections are in 60% isopropanol as well as dry lots.

This is a major molluscan collection, with a focus on eastern Canada. About 75% of the material is freshwater and terrestrial, but there is a rich representation of marine species. More of our marine collection is now from worldwide origins rather than from Canadian waters.
