The bivalve collection consists of 80,000 catalogued lots, mainly composed of North American freshwater mussels. Mussel/Host Database - OSU
Freshwater mussels are parasitic in their larval form. During this stage of development the larvae, called glochidia, attach themselves to a host (usually a fish). They remain attached for the duration of this life-cycle stage. MusselHost relationships are species specific a given species of mussel can only reside on specific host species. Much research has gone into determining the suitable hosts for each species of mussel.
